Compressed Air  –  Generation
Compressed air is generated by means of a compressor.  Air is drawn into the compressor from the atmosphere and delivered at a higher pressure and temperature (due to the compression cycle).  The compressor often adds impurities (mostly hydrocarbons) to the air depending on the type of compressor used

Various types of compressors are in use, ranging from positive displacement reciprocating (piston) compressors to rotary vane compressors, and dynamic compressors ranging from rotary screw to turbine compressors.  Single and multi-stage compressors and single and double acting reciprocating compressors are available.

Most compressors are available as lubricated or oil free. Compressors are generally selected for a specific purpose by considering the following factors: capacity, pressure, environmental conditions, allowable capital cost, total cost of ownership, and desired return on investment

Reciprocating Compressor
A positive-displacement compressor having one or more cylinders, each fitted with a piston, driven by a crank-shaft through a connecting rod. Compressors are either single stage or multistage and either single acting or double acting. Air supplied is pulsating so a form of pulsation damper is necessary and normally provided by using an air receiver. Reciprocating compressors are normally used for smaller air demand applications such as small factories and workshops

Rotary Vane Compressor

Vane compressors are positive displacement compressors and work on the principal of a vaned rotor eccentrically mounted in a cylindrical housing. Vane compressors are normally oil flooded and depend on a separator, like a rotary screw compressor, to reclaim the oil from the air stream

The air produced is non pulsating and typically supply on demand, thus only need an appropriate volume to pump into to help regulate loading and unloading cycles. Maintenance are similar to rotary screw compressors
